Louisiana’s Rare ‘Snow Day’ Remembered for its Wintry Magic
Louisiana received a rare occurrence on Monday, February 15, 2021, when snow began to fall in bayou country, making for a magical wintry display. On that day, at about 3:30 in the morning, there was a light dusting of ice on the roads of Lafayette. In another hour, snow began to follow a bit faster.
At that time in 2021, areas in Louisiana experienced a mixture of sleet, ice, and snow, with some parishes above I-10 getting a bit more snow. South of I-10, there was maybe an inch of accumulation that day and that was exciting to everyone in this area.
What was less fun for many people and first responders was the number of travelers on local, state, and federal highways who had to deal with a wintry mix. At that time, state offices were closed along with a whole host of private businesses, and people were asked to stay off of roadways.
Whether we spell it Sneaux Day or Snow Day, Monday, February 15, 2021, was like a late Valentine's Day card from Mother Nature saying, "I love you, Acadiana"! It was a magical day.
It ended up being a day when people celebrated what was falling from the sky by taking pictures, playing in the snow, building snowmen, and frolicking in the rarity that it was. It was beautiful. We so rarely get to enjoy a Sneaux Day that most people viewed it as a state holiday and stayed at home.
While sleet, ice, and snow do not make for great traveling, they do make for some beautiful pictures. It also forces most of us to slow down and take in all the beauty.
We received beautiful snow and ice pictures from people all across Acadiana. Let's take a look back at 2021:
