3 Southern Human Jukebox Band Students Killed in Tragic Accident Off I-49 Shoulder in Louisiana
Friends and loved ones are mourning the sudden loss of three Southern University students who were killed in an accident off I-49 in Louisiana.
A release from Louisiana State Police on Wednesday confirmed that Texas residents Tyran Williams, 19, Dylan Young, 21, and Broderick Moore, 19, were victims in a fatal crash that happened just after 7 p.m. on Tuesday (Dec. 6).
All three victims were students at Southern University and part of the world-famous Human Jukebox Band.
Police say that the students were changing a flat tire on a 1999 Jeep Laredo on the shoulder of I-49 in Natchitoches Parish when the driver of an 18-wheeler veered off the road and hit them.
One of the students was reportedly on the phone at the time with someone who called police after the crash took place.
For reasons still under investigation, a northbound 1997 Freightliner driven by 62-year-old Clyde Gay of Coushatta drifted onto the northbound shoulder, struck the left side of the Jeep and impacted all three pedestrians
All three victims died at the scene.
While routine toxicology tests are still pending in the ongoing investigation as to what caused the crash, Southern University offered condolences as school President and Chancellor Dennis J. Shields posted the heartbreaking news to the school's official Facebook page.
Our thoughts are with the families, friends, classmates and other loved ones of Broderick Moore, a freshman majoring in music from Cedar Hill, Texas; Dylan Young, a sophomore majoring in mechanical engineering from Cedar Hill; and Tyran Williams, a freshman majoring in music from Irving, Texas. All three young men were members of the Southern University Human Jukebox Marching Band, to which we also extend our condolences.
The school is also offering counseling to any students who may request it.
Southern Human Jukebox Band Director Kedric Taylor also shared his condolences, revealing to WBRZ that he just spoke to the students yesterday.
They were very humble. I talked to some of them yesterday and told them have a safe trip. [Brody's] last words to me were, 'Mr. Taylor I'm just taking a box and a suitcase home. I'll be back in a month.'
Taylor told WBRZ he was "very thankful" to know the three students while Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards also asked residents to join him in praying for the Southern University students and their families.
We offer our condolences to the families and loved ones of the students who were killed in this tragic accident and will update the story when and if any new information is made available.
