Cars Stranded In Lafayette Floodwaters At University Underpass
Heavy rainfall across Acadiana on Sunday evening (May 10) created dangerous driving conditions, and one moment in Lafayette is getting a lot of attention.
Video circulating online shows at least two vehicles attempting to drive through floodwaters at the University underpass, only to become stranded after stalling out.
Drivers Attempt To Cross Flooded Underpass
The University underpass is known locally for flooding during heavy rain, but that didn’t stop some drivers from trying to make it through.
In the video, at least one vehicle can be seen in high water and is ultimately left stuck, unable to move as floodwaters surround it.
The situation quickly turned from risky to costly, with potential damage likely already done to the vehicle.
Meteorologist Issues Immediate Warning
KLFY meteorologist Adam Olivier said he witnessed the incident unfold in real time and shared a direct warning to the public along with his video.
He urged drivers not to attempt crossing flooded roadways, noting that flash flooding was expected to continue as storms slowly moved through the area. A Flash Flood Warning remained in effect through the evening.

A Reminder As Flooding Impacts Acadiana Roads
The incident comes as storms caused widespread flooding across Acadiana, even forcing the temporary closure of I-49 Southbound in Lafayette Parish due to unsafe road conditions.
Officials continue to stress a simple but critical message during events like this: if you encounter water covering a roadway, do not attempt to drive through it.
