Lafayette Implements Licensing Mandate for Short-Term Rental Owners
The love-hate relationship that Lafayette, Louisiana has with short term rentals has been a controversial topic of conversation since 2012. They grew in popularity because it allows tourists to stay in the communities they are visiting versus in a hotel on the outskirts of town.
The plus is that not only is it convenient to be able to book your stay close to what event or local attraction is bringing you to the city you are visiting, tourists naturally spend more of their money near where they are staying. As a result of that, local communities' economy also sees a positive impact from short term rentals like Airbnb.
But just like anything else, there is always a down side that deters people from being fully on board. Some guests cause disruptions to the neighborhoods they are staying in causing tensions between STR owners and their neighbors who live there full time. Additionally there have been concerns over who is allowed to book through STR services and if they pose any threat to their families or children.
With that being said as of October 3rd 2023 "the City Council voted 4-1 to require every AirBnB, VRBO and short-term rental owner to buy a permit and follow other restrictions – some of the strictest in the state. In addition, the council completely banned short-term renting in RS-1 (residential) neighborhoods. There is no grandfathering or exceptions for people who rent out their own homes or apartments on the property where they live."
Updated Short Term Rental Ordinance:
- All short-term rentals must get a permit to operate starting April 2024.
- There are 12 requirements, including proof of ownership, notification of neighbors, and a $100 fee. Permits must be renewed every year.
- Maximum of 4 rooms and 2 people/room. No parties.
Owner/operator must be available 24/7 and respond within 1hr or 30 minutes between 11pm and 7am. - Single rooms may be rented, but only 1 at a time.
- Complete ban of all short-term renting in RS-1 residential neighborhoods beginning in October 2024.
