Louisiana is no stranger to strong winds. We've seen some of the strongest winds recorded in history come across our coastline in landfalling hurricanes such as Laura, Rita, Katrina, Ida, and others. We are painfully aware of just how much damage the wind can do which is why during tropical storm season we take precautions. On the day after Mardi Gras, we might not but we might wish we did.

With the exception of maybe two parishes all of Louisiana is under a wind advisory today. That means sustained winds of 15 to 25 mph will be common across the area. Winds of that speed can certainly create havoc for those attempting to manipulate an outside tent or canopy.

It will also create an issue for those who choose to wear long flowing skirts or dresses today and your best bet at creating an award-winning hairstyle might just have to include a hat.

Granted windy conditions are very common along our coastal parishes those who live inland might not be used to the blustery conditions. Forecasters do say wind gusts of 45 mph or even stronger are possible during the day today. Tropical Storm winds are only 39 mph so we could be looking at gusts in excess of tropical storm force.

Those gusts could pose problems on our roadways as well. Those who drive high-profile vehicles such as trucks, vans, SUVs, and the like will feel the wind bumping against their trucks today. Especially on east/west roadways such as I-10. The winds will be blowing from the south so that will be an almost 90-degree crosswind for motorists on the Interstate today.

Wind gusts could also bring down loose limbs and cause them to fall across powerlines in the area too. So, there is a risk of power outages as the day wears on. Forecasters suggest that you take the time to secure trash cans and other lightweight outdoor objects as they could be blown into neighboring yards or streets by the gusty winds.
