Waterpark Reveals Upgrades, Opening Date – Louisiana Road Trip
(KMDL-FM)Last year, waterpark fans across the Gulf South celebrated the grand opening of a new waterpark and family fun attraction called Serengeti Springs. The waterpark is actually part of a zoo so for families looking to maximize their vacation dollars and still create some memories this just might be the daytrip you've been looking for.
Serengeti Springs made it's debut last summer and thousands of guests filed through the turnstiles, got wet, splashed around, and left their comments on how the place could be even more fun and inviting. So, as the park prepares to welcome you back in just a few weeks we thought you'd like to know, they were listening and here are some of the upgrades that should enhance your stay.
Park designers realized that families and guests needed more space to create a "home base", if you will. You know, a place in the park, maybe a lounge chair or table where everyone leaves their stuff and everyone checks in with. So they've improved that aspect of your visit.

And, despite the desire for fun in the sun, what's the one thing we all look for during a deep south afternoon? If you said shade, you probably don't speak with an accent. In addition to creating more spaces for families and dining, the park designers have incorporated even more shade for guests.

For those looking for a more intimate experience at a waterpark, Serengeti Springs has added a pair of VIP cabanas. So, if you're willing to pay more, and I would imagine reserving in advance, that might be a better way for you to enjoy your time there.

Park officials say have indicated they already have several special events on the seaon's calendar including special adults only nights, teen nights, and nights that cater to families. As we mentioned, in addition the waterpark facilities you also have the opportunity to explore one of only two zoos in Mississippi.
Best Day Trips From Lafayette, Louisiana
Serengeti Springs is a part of the Hattiesburg Zoo. It is not the spectacle of the Audubon Zoo nor any other zoo in any other major city. But, for a small zoo, it has its good points and its charm. And if you're traveling with kids who really like waterparks this would be a great way to help them wind down after a day of splashing.
From Lafayette, take I-10 east to I-59 north. Follow I-59 to Hattiesburg. It's about a three-and-a-half-hour trip. You could make a weekend out of it or do a day trip. In my opinion, it's a great way for a family to maximize their personal time off, their vacation funds, and still provide an "adventure" that your kids will remember.
One more thing, if you like to camp there are some really cool campgrounds and Paul B Johnson State Park that are nearby too. And yeah, I used to hang out in Hattiesburg back in the day. It's a really welcoming college town. I am glad the Ragin Cajun of the University of Louisiana and the Southern Miss Golden Eagles are rebuilding their sports rivalry.
Serengeti Springs will open Memorial Day Weekend. It is open seven days a week from 10 am until 7 pm. The park offers dining options and some shopping. Tickets and passes may be purchased online via this link. The park will end its season on Labor Day.
