(KMDL-FM) April 29, 2026, will go down in Louisiana Lottery history as the night almost everybody became a millionaire in the Powerball Lottery game. In Louisiana, 11 tickets sold for that Powerball drawing won a prize of $1 million or more. Around the Powerball footprint, 91 total tickets earned a prize of $1 million or more. Why did that Powerball drawing produce so many winners?

If you peruse the Powerball page on the Louisiana Lottery website, you will see that the odds of a ticket matching all five of the white balls and not the Powerball are listed as 1 in 11,688,054. If you don't understand how odds work, I can tell you those odds would be considered extremely slim. Yet, in the April 29th drawing, 91 people managed to win the million-dollar (or more) prize despite those long odds.

Most Popular Powerball Theories: Why So Many Winners In One Single Drawing?

In our original story about the "night of a million wins" with Powerball, we mentioned there would likely be an investigation into how and why this sudden surge of winners occurred. And as you might imagine, there are many theories, but to the trained eye of a lotologist, you can see why one of those theories is the most likely scenario for explaining so many winners in one Powerball drawing.

Is Powerball Rigged?

No, Powerball and no other lottery game in the United States is rigged. There is too much outside scrutiny and layers of transparency for anyone to cheat at the draw games. I am sure a crafty computer expert with a really amazing printer could give the sanctity of the scratch-offs a run for their money, but even those tickets have so many checks and balances that the risk versus reward would not pan out in your favor.

Did Multiple Powerball Winners Get Their Numbers From a Fortune Cookie?

The second most popular theory that I have heard discussed does have a basis in facts. Many have theorized that the reason so many people played the same numbers is because of Chinese Fortune Cookies. A similar lottery winner's surge happened in 2005 when a host of lottery players from around the country all played the "lucky numbers" they got in a Chinese Fortune Cookie.

In the 2005 winner surge, lottery players in New York, 110 in total, won prizes of $150,000 to $500,000 in a Powerball drawing by playing fortune cookie numbers. Each of the winners revealed they had eaten Chinese food at different restaurants before the drawing. However, each of those restaurants used fortune cookies provided by Wonton Foods of New York City. Many of the cookies had the same "lucky numbers," and they just happened to hit.

Best Theory Why Powerball Had Multiple Million-Dollar Winners April 29th

Here is the real reason why I believe so many people won such large amounts in the April 29, 2026, Powerball drawing. It makes sense, but you have to visualize the process of filling out a Powerball ticket and not just asking the clerk for a Quick Pick.

Here are the numbers from the April 29, 2026, Powerball drawing to refresh your memory.

03   19   35   51   67   Powerball 15   Power Play x2

There were big wins in Louisiana, Indiana, Kansas, Mississippi, New Jersey, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Wisconsin. The jackpot prize of $143.4 million was also won by tickets sold in Kansas and Indiana. What is it about Powerball tickets sold in those states that prompted so many people to play the same numbers?

Did Being Lazy Really Pay Off for Lottery Players on April 29th?

If you guessed being lazy and being in a hurry, then you're well on your way to understanding how this lottery anomaly may have occurred in some states but not in others.

Take a look at the first number "3". What do you get if you add "16" to that number? Well, you get "19". Now, add "16" to "19" and what do you get? How about "35"? Do you see the pattern? Each number is precisely 16 numbers away from the other. See below? We did the math for you.

Now, if you look at a Powerball play slip from the states where the big wins happened, you'll notice all of those winning numbers appear in a straight line vertical column. It's like the players simply chose one number, then the number below it, and so on and so on. That is why so many tickets matched the five white balls but did not match the Powerball.

Why Did So Many Tickets Match Only the White Balls and Not the Powerball?

The Powerball numbers are chosen in a different section of the ticket, so they wouldn't have fallen in line with the other numbers chosen. Now,  this theory doesn't work for all lottery jurisdictions, but based on Internet scuttlebutt, it certainly holds water in the states where the big wins happened the most.

Following the April 29th night of historic wins, Powerball got another jackpot winner on the very next drawing. So, that means tonight's Powerball top prize will be $30 million. Remember, you could get a 10x multiplier if you add Power Play to your ticket tonight.

Also, the Louisiana Lottery will hold drawings tonight for Lotto with a top prize of $1.4 million and Easy 5 with an estimated jackpot of $70,000.
