Louisiana Hotel Safes Are Not Safe – Here’s Proof

Tourism is a big deal in Louisiana. Each year hundreds of thousands of visitors spend billons of dollars in our state. Keeping those guest happy and safe are important factors in keeping this revenue stream flowing. One of the ways that many travelers boost their security is by utilizing the in-room safe that is provided in many hotel rooms across the state.

The process in using a in-room safe is pretty simple. The safes are designed so that each individual guest can create their own unique code or combination that unlocks the door. I know in my travels we have placed travel documents, cash, and other valuables inside the safe thinking we are protected.

Well it turns out our sense of security was false at best. Because there is a hack going around on the social media site Tik Tok that suggests any in-room safe can be opened even if you don't know the unique code or combination that was entered.

Tik Tok influencer @leo..lenier has demonstrated in a video on that platform just how easily a hotel safe can be breached. His example on the platform has garnered more than 1.8 million views and if you've ever stored anything important in a hotel safe, after watching the video, you probably won't again.

The process of opening the safe was so simple I am surprised that it took the Internet this long to bring it out in the open. And for those of you who say "why are you telling people how to do this" I would reply in the words of my late father.  "A lock will only keep an honest man out, a thief will find a way".

The hack works like this. Simply press the lock button twice. Then the word SUPER will appear in the display screen. When you see it, punch in 0 0 0 0 0 0. The door will open.

@leo..lenier noted in a second video that each hotel should have a customized "master combination" but he noted that most hotels simply use the same one. It's probably the master code that came with the safe. Here's that second video, with the same chilling results.

Perhaps the best advice we can offer for this situation is this, don't travel with a lot of valuables. Of course, there are certain items that you have to carry with you and credit cards and cash are always a prime target for thieves. Just be mindful of how much you carry and don't keep all your valuables in one location in your hotel room.

Many travel experts advise splitting up cash, cards, travel documents, and other important items between several suitcases and carry on bags and always make a photo copy of those documents you can keep tucked away in a suitcase or at least take a photo on your phone, this way you might have some recourse in finding your valuables or at least replacing your travel documents should they be pilfered.
