Louisiana High School Fishing Team May Have Broken World Record This Past Weekend
A high school fishing team out of Bossier Parish may have set a world record after their impressive haul this past weekend in the Louisiana High School Bass Nation Caney Lake "Hawgfest".
I was checking out the standings to see where some friends of mine's kids finished. After I found their names and how well they did, it got me wondering, "dang, if they did this well, I wonder what first place did?"
Not knowing a whole lot about bass fishing tournaments, I wasn't too sure what a good amount was. But, I am smart enough to figure out that winning by more than 13 pounds is pretty impressive.
That's exactly what the team of Mason McCormick and Alexis Virgillito did. The Bossier Parish Bass Team caught what could be the heaviest stringer ever caught in a high school fishing tournament.
Their haul of five largemouth bass weighed in at a whopping 37.13 pounds! According to Wired2Fish.com, this is the biggest string of five bass ever weighed in a high school bass fishing tournament.
The team captain (and Dad) Bradley Virgillito had this to say about the kids on the team:
I can’t say enough about the young man Ben [Mason’s father] has raised. Mason goes above and beyond to try to teach Alexis. Today my heart was melting because of that. They found one on a bed, and Mason would not even cast to make sure she caught it. That process took almost an hour, but he was patient and so was she. This is what makes a team and us parents proud.
The team caught their fish on a variety of baits including spinnerbaits and soft plastics.
As a result of this win, McCormick and Virgillito will be heading to Nationals. Congrats you two!
Oh, and we'll follow this story and update once (hopefully) this record is confirmed.
