Many of us in south Louisiana know a bit about Ducks Unlimited (DU).

And for those that don't, Ducks Unlimited is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the conservation of wetlands and associated upland habitats for waterfowl, other wildlife, and people.

Headquartered in Memphis, Tennessee, the organization has been around since 1937.

DU has local chapters across the country, with leadership in place at the state and regional levels.

Earlier today, the organization announced the election of eight new members of its board of directors, of whom one is from right here in Acadiana.

Lafayette physician Jason Cormier is one of those new board members.

Dr. Cormier is president and CEO of Acadiana Neurosurgery and a current member of DU's Conservation Programs Committee (CPC) and CPC Science Subcommittee.

He is also a member of numerous professional groups, including the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the Louisiana State Medical Society, the Acadiana Angels Network, and many more.

“Ducks Unlimited is known for its well-defined, science-based conservation mission and exceptional leadership. Wetlands play a critical role in supporting and maintaining waterfowl and so much more,” said Ducks Unlimited President Chuck Smith. “I am proud to welcome these fellow conservationists to the ranks of leaders of the greatest conservation organization in North America.”

In addition to Dr. Cormier's placement on the board, DU Board member Jay Owen, of Broussard, Louisiana, has been named senior flyaway vice president of DU's Region 4.
