Daylight Saving Time 2024 – When Does Louisiana Spring Forward?

Louisiana has an issue with clocks. Our problem with the timepieces is pretty simple. The clock always moves too slowly when we are working. And, it moves too fast when we are enjoying ourselves. Okay, that's just a perception but what is "time" anyway?

When you think about it, we have no actual concept of what time is. We know we don't have enough of it and we're always racing against it, but what is it? According to Miriam Webster time is:

a nonspatial continuum that is measured in terms of events which succeed one another from past through present to future

That cleared things up, didn't it?

One thing we do know about time is how we measure it. We use hours and minutes and twice a year we have to adjust our timepieces because of the concept of Daylight Saving Time. Which in its day was a good idea. The concept of shifting the clock to match the workday made sense before the world became a 24-hour a day non-stop society.

What's always fascinated me about Daylight Saving Time is this. It's one of the few times we can get "everyone" to agree to do the same thing at the same time. Think about that. That's pretty amazing that we as a nation with a few exceptions can agree to mess with a device that measures something fluid just so we won't be late for church.

When Does Daylight Saving Time Begin in 2024?

Here in Louisiana and for most of the nation the jump forward by one hour will take place officially on March 10 at 2 a.m. Most of us will simply set our clock ahead one hour at bedtime the previous Saturday night or we'll let technology handle the changing of the clocks since almost everything we own these days is connected to the internet and the correct time.

The shift to Daylight Saving Time will happen one week before the Spring Equinox which is March 19th. The return to Standard Time will take place on November 3rd, 2024.

Didn't Congress Make Daylight Saving Time Permanent?

There has certainly been legislation proposed on the state and federal levels that would end our twice-a-year dance with the clock. However, the latest effort, the one that was pushed in Congress in 2023 is currently "under advisement" with members of the U.S. Senate's Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation.

Louisiana is one of 19 states that has passed legislation that would move the state into "year-round" Daylight Saving Time should Congress pass the measure and the legislation is signed by the President. But until that happens you'll just have to remember to Spring Forward (March 3) and Fall Back (November 9).
