Audubon Aquarium & Insectarium to Re-Open Tomorrow After 6-Month Renovation

After a six-month closure to renovate, the Audubon Aquarium and Audubon Insectarium in New Orleans are set to re-open tomorrow.

The re-imagined and state-of-the-art facility will open its doors to the general public on Thursday, June 8, 2023, at 10:00 am.

For much of this week, media along with Audubon members were allowed to get a sneak peek of the changes.

What's new at the Aquarium and Insectarium?

For starters, the Insectarium has moved from the U.S. Custom House on Canal Street to the same building as the Aquarium, building a combined experience that re-envisions the guest experience and educational programming.

Renovations to the Aquarium include a new, downriver entrance that features a multi-story bird-safe glass curtain wall, a monumental stairway, and a 2,500-square-foot lobby that tells the story of Audubon's conservation work around the world.

Once inside the Aquarium, galleries also have entirely new looks including the Mississippi River, Amazon Rainforest, and a new Top of the Gulf of Mexico experience.

How much did the renovations cost?

The total cost for the renovation was $41 million. However, this was the first major renovation since it opened in 1990.
