(KMDL-FM) Except Saturday nights at Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge and the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans on selected Sundays, Louisiana, as a whole, is very laid back. The dictionary defines the term "laid back" as relaxed and easy-going. I would say that sums up just about every place I know in Louisiana.

But the folks at World Atlas weren't satisfied with my answer of "they're all laid back," they wanted to know which Louisiana towns offer residents and visitors that special kind of comfort that only true relaxation can bring.

Now, when I think "laid back," my mind conjures up a Sunday afternoon after church with Andy, Barney, Aunt Bea, and Opie. The topic of conversation leans toward "going to the fillin' station for a bottle of pop" or "going over to Thelma Lou's to watch TV". Or perhaps, both could be accomplished in one laid-back afternoon, that's what I think of when you say laid back. See for yourself.

In the case of the World Atlas survey and article, they chose seven spots in our state. In the description of the article, the authors suggest they are looking for communities that are filled with local culture. They have a unique tie to history. And, the people of the communities are welcoming and happy to show you around.

Where Are Louisiana's Most Laid-Back Towns Located?

Just so you have an idea of how World Atlas broke it down, they chose one community from North Louisiana. There were two choices from CENLA, and the rest of the choices came from what most of us would call "South Louisiana"; however, only one of those four can honestly say they are in the heart of Cajun Country.

That honor belongs to Breaux Bridge, Louisiana. I think the Crawfish Festival and the associated history and culture that go with it really helped push Breaux Bridge in the survey. The authors recanted stories of Cajun music and dancing, fabulous food, and a host of "quirky" traditions.

Why Is the Telephone Book So Unique in Breaux Bridge, Louisiana?

Oddly enough, the "quirky tradition" that set Breaux Bridge apart from other towns was the practice of using nicknames in the local telephone directory. The authors suggested this "lean toward local" was a great example of how down-to-earth and close-knit a community like Breaux Bridge really is.

The article also mentioned Lake Martin, which should be listed as its own laid-back spot. I would have no trouble at all supporting that nomination. What place in Louisiana would you nominate for the most "laid back"? You can see the World Atlas list of the Seven Most Laid Back Towns in Louisiana, right here.
