(KTDY) - We all love very fast-paced lives in the 21st century, but it is time parents slow down and make time to talk to their children.

From the minute we wake up until the time we go to bed, we are all moving at 100 mph, and when we add everyday life distractions, we sometimes forget to address those who matter most to us.

I was recently out in public, and I heard a parent ask their child a fundamental question. The light bulb in my head went off when I heard the mother ask her child, perhaps the most critical question you can ask them after a busy day.

The mother asked her child a straightforward, yet crucial question: "How was your day?" The child replied that she had a perfect day, and I continued on my way.

For a few days, I thought about that question I heard the mother ask her child, and I decided to start asking it myself, to our kids. Each day when I see my kids for the first time after school, I ask them about their day.

In fact, my 6-year-old now answers the question before I can even ask it, and I love it. A straightforward question like, "How was your day?" can spark a great conversation between parents and their kids, but more importantly, it shows that we, as parents, are invested in their feelings and day.

Too often, we get caught up in things that happen at work or on social media, and we forget that our kids need our attention. In this digital age, devices often get in the way of parenting and socializing, and it's time for parents to slow down and reconnect with their kids.

It's no secret that the younger generation is struggling with face-to-face conversations, but by engaging with your kids daily, you can better prepare them for when the time comes to look someone in the eye and hold an adult conversation.

I certainly hope that you don't think that I am preaching to you, but when I heard that mother ask her daughter how her day went, I knew that I had to improve myself and invest more time in my day with the kids.

One simple question may lead to more than just the answer you're looking for, and that's a good thing.
