Lafayette Police Announce Important Reminders Before Potential Flood

(Lafayette, Louisiana)—Much of Louisiana is under a flood watch, and the Lafayette Police Department has a few important reminders for you as we prepare for potential flooding in Acadiana.

Storms will move into the area Tuesday evening, and the forecaster says they could linger throughout much of the week. Some storms will drop several inches of rain.

Sadly, some areas prone to flooding will flood this week, and Lafayette Police are preparing for the rising water. Barricades have already been stationed on the side of roads that are known to flood, and police ask that once the rain starts that you stay off the roads.

Sure, it can be tempting to get out and see what your community looks like, but getting on the roads while they are flooded only puts you and others in danger.

Sgt. Robin Green of the Lafayette Police Department says that when you're navigating through water on the roads, you cannot gauge the depth of the water, thus, you are putting yourself and your vehicle in danger.

She also reminds everyone that once barricades are in place and on the road, you cannot drive around them or move them. Yes, some have been known to do so, and that is not only illegal, it's also dangerous.

Lastly, Sgt. Green tells us that in a previous flood, a woman called for their assistance as flood waters entered her home because of people driving through her neighborhood and creating wakes while water was on the road.

Be a good neighbor and never drive through flooded areas; you're only pushing water into homes and businesses, and that's the last thing anyone needs when combating a flood.
