Lafayette Pharmacy Giving Away Life-Saving NARCAN at Free Event
Last week, regulators moved to make the potentially lifesaving drug NARCAN more widely available and approved it for over-the-counter sale. This means you no longer need a prescription to have it on hand. This weekend, a free event in Lafayette aims to put the critical antidote drug in more people's hands.
Neighbor's Pharmacy is hosting the event at their location at 6770 Johnston Street in Lafayette. From 10a-1p the Louisiana Department of Health will be educating the public on how to use the drug and offering free nasal doses of NARCAN. These can be kept at home or in the car in case you come into contact with someone facing an opioid emergency.
According to the FDA, NARCAN, or naloxone, is a fast-acting drug used to reverse opioid overdoses. Opioids like heroin or prescription painkillers can quickly slow down someone's nervous system and in the worst cases lead to death. You may have seen users appear to be in a trance-like state. Narcan can help. According to its makers, it works by rapidly reversing the life-threatening symptoms of an overdose, restoring normal breathing and consciousness. Narcan can be administered through nasal sprays or injections. In recent years, as the opioid crisis has grown many first responders and medical professionals carry it with them.
