Lafayette Jeweler Sent Diamonds to Space, Now They’re For Sale

In what has been over a year in the making, a Lafayette jeweler sent diamonds and other gemstones into space, and now they are back home.

Can you imagine wearing a piece of jewelry made from gems that orbited the earth for over a month? I am certain any space geek would love to wear that jewelry.

Heck, even non-space geeks would love to wear that jewelry.

Well, thanks to a Lafayette jeweler, your opportunity to own a piece that's been to space is now a reality, according to The Advocate.

The owners of Diana Rae Jewelry on Settlers Trace in Lafayette, after a facility tour and then lots of persistence, were able to get a load of diamonds and other gemstones on board a Falcon Heavy spacecraft that sent the jewels into space.

And not just the obligatory, millionaire-mission trip to space - 62 miles up and then right back down - these jewels orbited for over a month.

The Advocate reports that the folks at Diana Rae Jewelry are the first to take part in a commercial program of its type through NASA and SpaceX.

It started when the owners of the jewelry store were visiting relatives and were able to score a private tour of SpaceX facilities.

That planted a seed in the owners' brains, and their mission was now to get some of their diamonds on a rocket ship.

After 2 years of negotiations with SpaceX and NASA, a load (one kilogram) of diamonds and other gemstones from Dianna Rae Jewelers was loaded onto a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, which was on a mission to resupply the Internation Space Station.

Over this past weekend, the diamonds made their way from Florida back to Lafayette.

Now that the jewelers have the jewels back, they are available for purchase - loose, mounted in a custom piece, or as part of the "space line" of jewelry the business will be creating.
