Five of Our All-Time Favorite Lafayette Rumors
(Lafayette, Louisiana) - If you live in Lafayette or any of the surrounding areas, chances are you've heard some interesting rumors about people in Lafayette or about the city itself.
For years, I've heard some great rumors, and what is shocking is that some of the rumors have lived on for so many years. While most people know that the rumors aren't true, there are still those in Acadiana who believe what some tell them.
So, let's take a look at some of our favorite "Lafayette rumors" and see if you recognize any of them.

Let's start with the rumor that it's illegal to turn left on Johnston Street. I was told by a colleague that many truly believe it's illegal to make left turns on Johnston St. in Lafayette, but that's not true.
Sure, it can be a challenge or rather difficult to turn left on the busy roadway, but it's not illegal to turn left on Johnston St.
The next "Lafayette Rumor" that I love is that there's a restaurant on top of the Cajundome. For years, so many people believed that there was an eatery on top of the dome.
No, there's no restaurant on top of the Cajundome, but if there were, I'd be there often just for the views.
Now, we transition from the Cajundome to Festival International for another great rumor. For years, we've heard, "This is the year." Meaning that Dave Matthews would perform on stage at a festival in downtown Lafayette.
He's never performed at Festival International, but if we keep the rumor going, perhaps one day he'll be booked in Lafayette.
From Dave Matthews in downtown Lafayette to Shaquille O'Neal in River Ranch, the Lafayette rumors continue. Of all my favorites, this is the one rumor I laugh at the most each time I hear it.
How many times has someone told you that Shaq has a house in River Ranch? Anytime a new home is being built in River Ranch, this rumor starts to spread, 'That's Shaq's new house."
Well, we're here to tell you, Shaquille O'Neal does not own a house in River Ranch. He was once asked about it, and he squashed the rumor.
And now to our final Lafayette rumor. A colleague told me for years that many in Lafayette believed that Tom Petty graduated from USL. He went into the yearbooks on campus and could not find any evidence that the musical icon graduated as a Ragin Cajun.
All of these rumors are great, and we know that there are some we're probably missing. So, feel free to let us know about the "Lafayette rumprs" you've heard, and we'll add them to the list.
Until then, keep listening because you never know what someone may come up with next.
