Lafayette Parish Deputy Explains Why Thieves Are Targeting Trucks
(Lafayette, Louisiana) Authorities across South Louisiana are reminding residents to lock their vehicle doors this summer, as many teens are out of school.
Every summer, we see reports of an increased number of vehicle break-ins, and often police attribute this to the fact that there are more teenagers out walking late at night. With school out for the summer, young men and women are staying out later than usual, and sadly, some are tempted to engage in illegal activities, like breaking into vehicles.
I recently ran into a friend of mine who works for the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Department, and when I asked her if they were staying busy this summer, she said it has been non-stop. She elaborated that teens are running around the parish pulling on the doors of trucks, and some are walking away with more than just loose change.
The deputy told me that those pulling on doors are often targeting trucks in the parish because they know that most hunters drive trucks. I asked her to explain, and she said that while hunters are preparing for the upcoming season, they at times unintentionally leave their guns in their trucks, and the would-be thieves know that.

I am sharing this with you to remind you always to lock the doors of your vehicles and never leave guns or anything valuable inside. Hunting season for doves and teal is rapidly approaching, and the last thing you want is for someone to steal your gun and then ultimately commit a crime with what they took out of your truck.
Unfortunately, we have to remind each other to lock everything up these days, but that's the world we are in. Teenagers are out at night, and some are looking to steal what you've left in your truck, so lock it and remove what is yours.
I encourage you to share this friendly reminder with others on social media so that they can avoid falling victim to this crime. Police and deputies across Acadiana are working nonstop this summer to investigate break-ins, and we certainly don't want your gun to be in the hands of someone who is looking to commit crimes.
Why Does Hunting Season Start in Louisiana?
Dove season in Louisiana begins on September 7th and is divided into two zones: North and South.
As for teal season, duck hunters will be allowed in the blinds starting on September 14th.
Recently, the Carencro Police Department posted a reminder on social media.
