This Video Features the Holy Grail of ‘Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade’ Facts
Everyone knows that Indiana Jones took his name from the family dog. But did you know that the man who played Indy’s dad, Sean Connery, is only 12 years older than Harrison Ford? Despite the relative closeness of their ages, director Steven Spielberg and producer George Lucas couldn’t imagine anyone but James Bond playing the father of Indiana Jones. That’s just one of the Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade facts featured in this new episode of You Think You Know Movies!
Before Lucas finalized Last Crusade as the third Indiana Jones sequel, he was working on an idea called Indiana Jones and the Monkey King. In 1984, Lucas developed an outline for the story, which would have followed Indy to Scotland, where he would have encountered ghosts, and then to Africa, where Indy would have discovered the Fountain of Youth. Although the Last Crusade went through many permutations, and the final version was a hunt for the Holy Grail, the idea of the promise of everlasting life was still featured in the Last Crusade and its famous final scene. (“He chose ... poorly.”)
