Assuming that the weather will be cooperative construction crews working on the I-10 widening project in St. Martin Parish will continue with work tonight that will affect motorists who use the Breaux Bridge Exit (109) off I-10. These closures in particular affect the eastbound entrance ramp at that exit.

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development has announced these plans for those closures beginning this evening.

• Friday, December 18 at 8:00 p.m. until Saturday, December 19 at 1:00 a.m.

• Saturday, December 19 at 8:00 p.m. until Sunday, December 20 at 1:00 a.m.

• Sunday, December 20 at 8:00 p.m. until Monday, December 21 at 1:00 a.m

As you have probably noticed the ramp work and closures won't take effect until the evening hours, hopefully, after the majority of the traffic flow has diminished. The work that is being done involves the construction of the inside shoulder of the ramp. Something that would be virtually impossible and very dangerous to do with traffic present on the ramp.

Detour routes are posted but basically, eastbound travelers will have to pull a "Christopher Columbus". In other words, to go east, they will have to travel west first. The official detour route for eastbound traffic suggests that motorist exit from Breaux Bridge heading westbound to Exit 104. At that point, motorists can circle under the Interstate and get back in the eastbound lanes to continue their journey.

That won't be all the closures necessary to get the work done. There will be some more scheduled for next week.

It looks as if next week, the westbound ramp will get a similar treatment as the eastbound exit ramp is receiving this weekend.

Now, if you're wondering just how long this project, the I-10 widening project, has been going on. It started in May of 2017 and the $124.7 million dollar project is scheduled to be completed in March of next year. So, if we play our cards right we could be seeing signs of coming out of the pandemic at the same time start to see construction signs and cones disappearing from I-10.

That already sounds a lot better than what we have had to deal with in 2020.
