In what was a close race through out the night, the AP has called the gubernatorial race in favor of Governor John Bel Edwards. Throughout most of the evening, the race between the incumbent Edwards and Republican challenger Eddie Rispone was 50/50.

However, once many of the South Louisiana parish returns began coming back, the Governor's lead began to expand drastically. The AP and several other media outlets called the race once Edwards' lead hit the 20,000 vote mark. Edwards' victory marks the first time in recent history that a Southern Democratic Governor has won re-election.

Many believed that heavy support from President Donald Trump would help swing the race in favor of Rispone, but that did not turn out to be the case.
