Governor John Bel Edwards took a historic step today (5/19) and signed medical marijuana into law in the state of Louisiana.

The law is expected to make medical marijuana available to patients in Louisiana.

Edwards wife, Donna, was a big proponent for legalizing medical marijuana in the state, due mostly to the fact that a family from Edwards hometown of Amite, who have a son that suffers from daily seizures, could benefit from medical marijuana.

"This is one of those bills I believe will have a positive impact on the people that need it the most," Edwards said. "The state of Louisiana should not interpose itself between doctors and patients when the doctors believe they have a patient who will benefit from medical marijuana."

Medical marijuana won't be immediately available to patients. By some estimates it could take up to 18 months. Looking toward other states who have legalized medical marijuana, it could take longer.
