Remember when it was the coolest thing to have a CD player in your car instead of a tape deck? Now, it appears that may be heading toward extinction.

According to a report in the Telegraph, "Ford has signaled that it is doing away with the CD players from its cars and wants drivers to access their libraries of digital music via the internet. It has become the first mainstream manufacturer to scrap the in-car CD multichanger. The new Ford Focus dashboard will include instead a USB socket allowing iPods and other digital music players to be plugged in.

Sheryl Connelly, global trends and futuring manager at Ford, said: "In-car entertainment technology is moving digital more rapidly than almost any other element of the vehicle experience. The in-car CD player – much like pay telephones – is destined to fade away in the face of exciting new technology."
