Finally, we get to be number one. Of course, it's a list nobody wants to be on top of but here we sit. What entity has ranked our fair community the best in the land? Well, it's Walgreens and what we're so highly revered for at the moment is the flu.

Louisiana has jumped out the gate this flu season and is one of only a handful of states that are experiencing high levels of flu and flu-like activity. And apparently at the epicenter of the coughing, sniffling, sneezing, body aches, and fever is Lafayette.

The Walgreens flu index uses retail prescription data for antiviral medication used to treat influenza. That's how they have arrived the distinction that Lafayette currently holds. The number two city behind Lafayette for flu is Las Vegas and Biloxi-Gulfport. Hmm, I wonder if all those unwashed hands on those slot machine handles have anything to do with the spread of the flu?

Why of course it does. Doctors agree that in addition to getting your flu shot and staying away from sick people one of the best defenses against the flu is frequent and thorough hand washing. We'll wait while you grab the sanitizer.

What makes the flu stats so remarkable for this year is that the season started almost a month earlier than when it normally starts. Usually, flu activity starts to rise during the month of October. This year over 2,000 cases of flu were reported in the state during the month of September.

Maybe because we started earlier we will finish earlier? Probably not, unless you take those precautions we mentioned earlier. Oh, and if you do find yourself not feeling well and are experiencing flu or flu-like symptoms, please stay at home.
