First Positive Cases Of Coronavirus Confirmed In Lafayette Parish

The first positive cases of coronavirus have been confirmed in Lafayette Parish.

The announcement was made during a late-night briefing from Lafayette Mayor-President Josh Guillory confirming two positive cases of COVID-19 in the Acadiana area.

There have been many rumors over the last week about potential positive cases of the coronavirus here in Acadiana, but these are the first confirmed cases of COVID-19 in our area to date. Authorities warned the public that positive cases in our area would be inevitable and that we shouldn't be shocked when we heard about them.

COVID-19 screening in Lafayette began this morning at the CAJUNDOME and saw nearly 300 people on the first day. Lafayette Consolidated Government Communications Director Jamie Angelle told our KPEL News team that screenings would continue daily until they weren't needed anymore.

Even with the latest updates, Lafayette doesn't come close to comparing to the hotbed of cases in the greater New Orleans area. Still, we must all remain vigilant and proactive—following all guidelines and orders from our leaders on the national, state, and local levels.
