Firefighters from multiple agencies responded to a fire this afternoon at the Alvin's Island beach store in Destin.

Alvin's Island owns multiple stores along U.S. Highway 98, but this location (Store #11) is reportedly one of the oldest buildings along the Destin highway, built long before the area became a huge tourist destination.

There were major delays as firefighters fought the blaze for hours and based on the last update, the eastbound lanes were reopened around 4:45 p.m. this afternoon.

The cause of the fire is unknown at the moment, but crews battled the blaze at the Alvin's Island location near Airport road.
