The popularity of sports is built on the high emotion that it evokes from participants and fans alike. Sometimes that emotion gets out of hand and stories of less than exemplary sportsmanship make the headlines. This is a case of that.

The incident in question stems from a reported altercation between a family member of one of the players and one of the umpires who officiated the contest. According to reports during the Eunice High versus Church Point High baseball game a player for Church Point was disqualified for unspecified reasons.

Following the game that was won by Eunice by a score of 14 to 4, the brother of the ejected player engaged the umpire in the parking lot. It was reported that the conversation became heated. It was also reported during the heat of that conversation that the umpire allegedly brandished a weapon.

So far no witnesses have come forward to corroborate those claims of a firearm being produced on school grounds. The mere possession of a weapon on school property is forbidden by law.

Another facet of the investigation has to do with LHSAA policy and procedures involving game officials. LHSAA policy dictates that all game officials be escorted by a member of law enforcement to their vehicles following a contest. According to witnesses at the scene, this escort did not occur.

Police in Eunice are continuing their investigation into this incident and they are asking that anyone who might have witnessed the events in question to please come forward. The number to call is (337) 457-2626.
