AURANGABAD: A major fire in the main firecracker market in Aurangpura area in the heart of the city around 11.30 am reduced all the 200 shops and stalls to ashes, dampening the residents' mood to celebrate Diwali in a big way.

Several fire tenders had to be pressed into action to bring the fire under control, though by that time all the shops had already been reduced to ashes.

Hundreds of customers had a miraculous escape, and rushed out of the market in time avoiding any loss of life. The prompt action by activists and the police helped the panicked shoppers to come out of the affected market having two entrances that doubled as exit points too.

The district collector Nidhi Pandye the police chief Amitesh Kumar as well as civic body officials and office-bearers had rushed to the spot to take stock of the situation. The district collector has also ordered an inquiry into the fire.
