October 3rd will mark the 18th anniversary of Deftones first album, Adrenaline. Since then, Deftones have grown to be loved by many with their energetic live shows, as well as their mellow to in your face tracks from all of their albums. When they played a sold-out show at the Varsity Theatre in Baton Rouge, La. they absolutely did not disappoint.  This was Deftones first time playing in Baton Rouge. They were in support of their critically acclaimed album, Koi No Yokan. The venues that they have been playing on this tour have been significantly bigger. However, Varsity Theatre in Baton Rouge, an 800 capacity venue, knew what a treasure this show would be when they booked it. They started the show with the title track of their last album, Diamond Eyes. You can watch that awesomeness here: http://youtu.be/1A5PlnsyZBg They played new tracks 'Tempest', 'Rosemary', 'Swerve City' and threw in many fan favorites like 'Headup', the immensely popular 'Change (In The House Of Flies) and closed with '7 words'. We were lucky enough to be able to sit down and chat with sampler/DJ/keyboardist Frank Delgado and bassist Sergio Vega. They've been enjoying the hell out of the tour so far, which at this point has been a 6 week jaunt that started in the UK and made its way state-side. When asked about how the name for the new album, Koi No Yokan, came about, Delgado said it was something that Chino (Moreno, singer/guitarist) brought to the table after many names had been thrown around. The reason they like it so much is because there's no real translation to English for it. Plus it looks and sounds cool. Their pre-show routine was something I thought to be really cool. They get together and listen to music to get their heads ready for the show. The kicker is that it's the same music that's playing in-house. So they and the crowd are hearing the same thing, and can all vibe together. Both Delgado and Vega agreed that their favorite songs to play live are the new ones from Koi No Yokan. Embarrassing moments for Delgado are mainly technical ones because he's pretty posted up. Vega however, got a good laugh recalling his on-stage falls since he is 'all over the place'. For those that don't know, Sergio Vega is also in a band called Quicksand. I asked if the band ever thought about covering any Quicksand songs. Vega was quick to say no, but Delgado kept the dream alive, and admitted that the band had played around with some Quicksand songs at practices. Many gave questions, or just expressed their love for bass player Chi Cheng. For Cheng's full story, to stay up to date on his progress, or to donate, please visit OneLoveForChi.com
