Deadly Lake Turns Animals Into Statues

There is a lake in Tanzania, Lake Natron, that is sure to be a little piece of hell on Earth. At least for some animals, as it seems to not only be deadly to them, but it turns them into creepy, awesome statues! Keep reading to find out more!

The lake takes its name from natron, a naturally occurring compound made mainly of sodium carbonate, with a bit of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) thrown in. Here, this has come from volcanic ash, accumulated from the Great Rift valley. Animals that become immersed in the water die and are calcified.

 

The article goes on to talk about Nick Brandt, who directed the Michael Jackson video for Earth Song. The video was shot around Lake Hell. He took some extremely awesome pictures of some animal statues that the lake had created! Unfortunately we can't show them to you here because they belong to him, but you CAN see some of them.
