See the First Gorgeous Set Photos From Christopher Nolan’s ‘Dunkirk’
Whether traveling through wormholes in space, the seedy streets of Gotham City or the mental recesses of characters’ minds, Christopher Nolan always manages to awe us with his expansive, crisp looks at various worlds. And now he’s applying that skill set to a period war drama for the first time.
Nolan’s tenth feature film, Dunkirk, will chart the events of Nazi invaded France during World War II. Based on the historical Operation Dynamo, the film follows the May of 1940 evacuation of the British Expeditionary Forces and Allied troops in the harbor of Dunkirk. We haven’t heard much about the film since a few scattered casting announcements, but Warner Bros. has announced production began this month and new photos have surfaced online. The full synopsis from Warner Bros. is below:
Dunkirk opens as hundreds of thousands of British and Allied troops are surrounded by enemy forces. Trapped on the beach with their backs to the sea they face an impossible situation as the enemy closes in.
Photographer Pierre Volot has been sharing photos from the Dunkirk set on his Instagram and Twitter accounts, first spotted by Cinefilos. The stunning shots feature Nolan around the French harbor with his crew, shooting in the actual locations of the historic battles. Check out the photos below, and keep an eye on his accounts as the production travels to Holland and the U.K.:

Dunkirk will star Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, Mark Rylance, Kenneth Branagh, Aneurin Barnard, Jack Lowden, James D’Arcy, Barry Keoghan, Tom Glynn-Carney, newcomer Fionn Whitehead and One Direction’s Harry Styles. Most exciting is the return of Interstellar cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema, who will be shooting the war drama with Nolan with a combination of 65mm film and 65mm IMAX. Dunkirk opens July 21, 2017.
