As just announced at CinemaCon, Fox is moving ahead with its long-in-development Choose Your Own Adventure movie. The project was last discussed four years ago, when it was revealed that Fox had brought in Rawson Marshall Thurber to direct the film and Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant to write it. At that time, there was no indication that it would be any different than any other movie. But when Fox announced the film today, it was as part of an initiative called “CtrlMovie,” which would let moviegoers choose the outcomes of their films by voting for choices on a phone app. This Choose Your Own Adventure movie will be made in this CtrlMovie technology.
If you are going to make a movie where the audience chooses the characters’ decisions, there’s no better brand than Choose Your Own Adventure. That makes total sense.
I’m still not sure I’m down with interactive movies though. I go to movies to be entertained; I want the film to do the work, not me. Forcing me to choose (or, even worse, having my experience dictated by the whims of a popular vote in a room where I could be surrounded by morons) sounds like a dicey proposition.
Would I try an interactive movie? Sure. I loved Choose Your Own Adventure books as a kid; it almost feels hypocritical of me to reject a movie version sight unseen. Maybe the issue is just calling it an “interactive movie.” I’m instinctively resistant to that phase, and to the idea of my decisions influence a “movie.” Call it a cinematic video game or something, and I don’t have a problem.
