Charles Manson Loses Latest — And Possibly Final — Shot At Parole
One of the country’s most infamous killers has once again lost his chance to go free.
On Wednesday, a California panel denied parole for Charles Manson. This was his 12th attempt to make parole since his incarceration and conviction in 1969. He and three female followers were convinced and sentenced to death for the brutal slaying for Sharon Tate, the wife of film director Roman Polanski, who was also eight months pregnant at the time of her murder.
Manson and his followers were also convicted in the deaths of four other people. All of the defendants were convicted and sentenced to death but the California Supreme Court outlawed the death penalty in 1972 and their punishments were changed to life in prison.
The parole hearing held at Corcoran State Prison in Kings County, California found that Manson did nothing to help with his rehabilitation and “can find nothing good as far as suitability factors go,” said board member John Peck. Manson didn’t even attend his own hearing.
It also may be one of his last chances of going free. Under state law, Manson’s request for another parole hearing can be rejected for another 15 years, meaning he would be more than 90 years old by the time he gets another chance.
He also hasn’t been an ideal prisoner. He has remained unrepentant for his crimes and the murders he and his followers committed. He’s also been cited twice for having a smuggled cell phone in his cell and once for possession of a homemade weapon.
