Assumption Parish Sinkhole Poses No New Threat
The video that KPEL shared with listeners last week showing more sinking going on at the Bayou Corne sinkhole in Assumption Parish has been shared more than 3 million times.
The whole nation has been mesmerized by the video, but what are the ramifications for those in that area?
State officials says that even though the video is dramatic, it is nothing new, and they expect that kind of activity at the site.
The sinkhole formed in August 2012, and some 150 families have been evacuated from that area.
When the sinkhole first formed, it was less than nine acres, but in the last year the sinkhole has been growing. It now encompasses 24 acres.
State Department of Natural Resources says the ground below the sinkhole is continually settling, so the growth of the sinkhole has been expected.
The formation of the sinkhole came about when an underground salt cavern collapsed.
