Allman Brothers Band Drummer Butch Trucks Dead at 69

The music world has lost another great as legendary Allman Brothers Band drummer Butch Trucks has passed away at the age of 69. Page Stallings, Trucks' booking agent, confirmed the news to Rolling Stone, but an official cause of death has yet to be revealed. Trucks passed away Tuesday (Jan. 24).

Trucks was one of the founding members of the legendary band in 1969, playing alongside percussionist Jai Johanny Johanson, Duane and Gregg Allman, guitarist Dickey Betts and bassist Berry Oakley. Though the lineup changed somewhat over the years and there were multiple splits of the group, Trucks played with the band through 2014. In recent years, Trucks had formed his own band to play shows.

The drummer was born in Jacksonville, Fla. in 1947 and started playing drums in eighth grade. After graduating high school, he started playing in two bands -- the Vikings and Echoes, as well as the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra. While at Florida State University, he formed a group called the Bitter End and it was while playing with that band that he first met Duane and Gregg Allman. Three years later, the Allman Brothers Band was formed.

Their catalog includes such iconic studio albums as their self-titled debut, Eat a Peach and Idlewild South as well as the standout concert disc, At Fillmore East. Our condolences to the Butch Trucks and Allman Brothers family on the passing of the legendary drummer.
