It is the time of year when we as a society decide that the upcoming election, the economy, and the way the Saints are playing isn't scary enough. So we go out and seek new ways to amp up our adrenal glands and soil ourselves in public. If you happy to enjoy the creepy side of life New Orleans is your kind of town. If you're planning a road trip to the Big Scary Easy, here are some things you can look for.

    Open Tombs And Graves Everywhere

You're probably aware that burying people in the ground in New Orleans and many parts of Louisiana is just not possible. That means there are a lot of tombs that are basically out in the open. There are also a lot of really sick minded individuals who make their living stealing from the dead. Often times these grave robbers fail to close up shop after they've taken from the dead. Either that or the dead in question are getting up and walking around the city. I am pretty sure if they roamed the French Quarter they wouldn't be out of place at all.

    Werewolves Roam The Streets

We've all seen people in New Orleans that we weren't quite sure if they were human or animal. In fact calling some of them an animal other than human might be a compliment. The reason there are so many werewolves in New Orleans is that the climate is just right for their survival. Werewolves or the Rougarou are often created by rainwater. Heaven knows New Orleans has plenty of that. In order to be created by rainwater one must drink the water from the paw of an existing were wolf. I am not sure if this is related to purchasing a Lucky Dog or not.

    Haunted Hotels Are In Abundance

Almost every old hotel in the city that is worth its salt has a ghost in residence. Most of the ghosts are nice and they won't open your mini-bar and move stuff around resulting in extra charges on your room account. According the legend at the Le Pavillion Hotel the ghost of woman has been known to sit on the bed of guests at night. She reportedly strokes the sleeping guest with an icy cold hand and says " I will never let you go". I am guessing housekeeping at Le Pavillion has a lot of requests for fresh sheets.

There's A Vampire In The French Quarter

You probably thought the Saints were the only thing that sucked in New Orleans. You would be wrong in that assumption. According to legend Ramon, one of the first known vampires in the New Orleans area, still roams the French Quarter. The legend says that Ramon owned a house in The Quarter and when he "died" the servants buried him in the garden. That's when they found all the dead bodies that had been drained of their blood. I am also guessing they started filling out resume's too.

Those Real People Who Pretend To Be Statues

If there was one law besides "fat people must remain fully clothed at all times" I would pass for New Orleans, it would be to ban these statue performers. I admire their ability to paint themselves in such away that they appear to be made of stone or metal. I hate the way they always choose to scare me.  I understand you are performing. I honor your craft. I might actually drop a buck in your hat but no, you choose to break character just as I approach or even worse when I don't notice. I think I am going to dress as a pigeon and  demonstrate my acting ability the next time I go to the French Quarter.
