As people begin to get back to their homes, it's estimated that over 40 thousand homes in Louisiana have been damaged by the floods.

Governor Edwards spoke along with FEMA administrator Craig Fugate on Tuesday, saying that at least 30,000 people have been rescued since the flooding started on Friday.

While there are areas that are starting recovery, Governor Edwards warned that new places could see flooding, and that officials are still in search and rescue mode.

"I don't know we have a good handle on the number of people who are missing," the governor said.

About 40,000 people had signed up for FEMA assistance, while the number of parishes added to the federal disaster declaration went up, totaling 20 parishes.

Officials estimated that 75% of homes were a "total loss" in Livingston Parish, one of the hardest hit by the floods.

The death toll has reached 11 people as of 4pm (8/16).
