There are only a handful of classic Star Wars characters that Rebels hasn’t yet had occasion to reintroduce, and Obi-Wan Kenobi always seemed a likely target, given his Clone Wars past. Now, Rebels producers offer new insight into the characters’ eventual Rebels return, including what it might mean for Ezra.

You’re warned of potential Season 3 spoilers from here on out, but the most recent Rebels trailer only promised that an elder Obi-Wan Kenobi (now voiced by Stephen Stanton, replacing Clone Wars’ James Arnold Taylor) would share one final showdown with Darth Maul; not that he’d necessarily meet the Ghost crew. After all, one might wonder why Obi-Wan treated Luke as the last Jedi hope, if he’d known several others were crewing the Rebellion.

That said, supervising producer Dave Filoni chatted with ComicBook about finding the right reason for Obi-Wan’s return to Star Wars Rebels, seemingly confirming the character to have at least some interaction with Ezra:

Everything has to make sense from a story standpoint, and if it makes sense and it’s valuable to the character’s past, then I don’t think you hesitate to do it … Certainly these characters aren’t foreign to me having worked here so long. So, I’m pretty confident when going into them what they’re about, but you do tread carefully because you can’t do it just because you’re trying to add something [to the guest star's past]. I’ve always said, it’s the same thing with Ahsoka. It has to be valuable to Ezra. This experience, whatever it is, whatever form it takes, has to be valuable to the characters that are the center of Star Wars Rebels.

There are a lot of things that I could do in Star Wars, and I try to do things that work with the story group to be true to the characters and where they need to go. It’s surprising sometimes where they go. I would say it’s surprising at the end of the day, and I don’t want to give anything away, if we wind up in the presence of an old wizard, that would be a surprising thing to pull off.

Those still aboard the Ghost are at least looking for Obi-Wan, as Ezra’s vision for how to destroy the Sith pointed in the Jedi master’s direction, but only narrowed their choices to a planet with twin suns. Maul will naturally get there first, but will Obi-Wan have much, if any major interaction with the cast? Does meeting the Ghost crew confirm Maul no longer poses a threat?

Watch a trailer for this week’s “Through Imperial Eyes” in the meantime.
