Today is St. Medard's Day, or pronounced in Cajun French "Sam-e-da". Never heard of it? Well learn up, because it looks like it's going to be pretty nice around here.

St Medard lived in 5th & 6th Century France and is the patron saint of weather and rain.

According to www.saints.sqpn.com,  "Legend says that when he was a child, Medard was once sheltered from the rain by a hovering eagle. This is his most common depiction in art, and led to his patronage of good weather, against bad weather, for people who work the fields, etc.

Legend has it that if it rains on his feast day, the next 40 days will be wet; if the weather is good, the next 40 will be fine as well. He was also depicted as laughing aloud with his mouth wide open; this led to his patronage against toothache."

I remember years ago hearing about this for the first time. I had never heard of St. Medard or the 40 days of rain thing until then. That year it rained on St. Medard's Day, and it rained every day after that. I can't say if it was exactly 40 days, but for at least a month, it rained every day.

It looks nice today, so should we expect 40 days of rain? Hopefully we can get 40 days of today.
