Popeyes didn't own it's own recipes...until now. They've just paid a reported $43 million for them.

No, it's not like they stole their recipes from somewhere. It's just that the Atlanta based company who franchises the restaurants didn't own them. Those belonged to Diversified, which is owned by the estate of the chain's founder, Al Copeland.

Instead of paying Diversified $3.9 million a year until 2029 for the royalty's for recipes and spices, they offered to buy it out right for the $43 million, and be done with that. Diversified, obviously, accepted.

Even though Al Copeland lost the company that he founded in 1972 in a 1990s bankruptcy case, he still retained the exclusive contract to supply spices to Popeyes through Diversified Foods and Seasonings.

“With the cooperation of the Copeland family, this transaction now brings important intellectual property — Popeyes’ core recipes — under brand ownership for the first time in our company’s history,” Chief Excecutive Officer Cheryl Bachelder said.

“Popeyes now owns its recipes in perpetuity for use worldwide and has clarity of

supply and pricing terms through the balance of the supply agreement,” Bachelder said.

“We thank the Copeland family for reuniting these treasured recipes with the brand Al Copeland Sr. created.”

I just want to point out again, for fun, that even though there are 2,248 restaurants in the United States, three territories and 27 foreign countries, Lafayette has one of only THREE Popeyes Buffets in the whole wide world! Be proud!
