To say Church Point Mardi Gras will be different this year would be an understatement.

Eating, drinking and being merry are pretty much the core attributes of Mardi Gras, and with the open container law being enforced in Church Point this weekend residents are NOT pleased.

UPDATE: The "no open containers" rule seems to be a bit modified according to a report from KLFY. According to their report,

The chief says this means no glass bottles–all alcohol must be in a cup.

While it all seems confusing, I would proceed with caution if you plan on partying in Church Point this Mardi Gras.

Original Story: Church Point has always had an open container law on the books, but according to KATC, officials say they've been "lenient" in years past and looked the other way during the Mardi Gras holiday.

Although Church Point Police Chief Albert Venable says he knows the open container law will be hard to enforce with the thousands that are expected to be in streets for this year's Mardi Gras festivities he didn't offer any explanation as to why this year's decision is different from year's past.

Residents are unhappy with the ban—not just because it's the most "un-Mardi Gras" thing ever, but because it was so last minute.

I think [residents] are very pissed off ahttp://www.katc.com/story/34589136/no-open-containers-for-church-point-mardi-grasbout it. I also don't agree with the fact that they brought it up at the very last minute to where the people who paid to put their floats in the parade - now they're not allowed to drink

Many also believe it will hurt businesses, specifically with all the visitors that Church Point hosts annually for their traditional Courir De Mardi Gras celebration.

I think it's going to hurt Church Point a lot with revenues. They could be making money off of people. I know people are still going to drink. But they made it a law. It's a law. We got to abide by it. I can understand the situation

And some were just flat out honest about how Cajuns like to party on Mardi Gras.

I'm not going because I can't drink. I could kind of understand it because some years it does get out of hand. Some people get a little too drunk. But in south Louisiana, they also like to drink. Some of them feel like they need to be entertained by drinking

While Police Chief Venable understands there will be difficulty, he still expects "full cooperation" from residents.

What do you think about the open container law being enforced in Church Point?
