Overnight rainfall was not welcome across much of South Louisiana this morning. There are many places where even an additional sprinkle will just add to the problems residents are already facing.

While the Vermilion River in Lafayette will slowly begin to recede over the next couple of days, it is still creating havoc for residents that live along and near that body of water.

Meanwhile residents along the Mermentau River and its associated tributaries, bayous, and coulees are keeping a watchful eye on rising water.

The last report from the Mermenau gauge showed that the water was continuing to rise very slowly. The most recent report from the Advanced Hydrologic Prediction Service showed the Mermentau was at 10.47 feet. This is almost six and one half feet about flood stage.

The crest of the Mermentau is forecast to occur either late Thursday evening or early Friday morning of this week. The river should be well above flood stage for at least the next week to ten days. It could be even longer if there are additional heavy rains in the area.
