After a successful two week run the Louisana Department of Health and Hospitals has announced that the free flu shot program will continue. The decision to make flu shots available to anyone who wanted one free of charge was done in response to the seriousness of the season's flu outbreak.

Between January 29th and February 10th, almost 4,000 Louisiana residents took advantage of the free vaccination. Despite the fact that this year's vaccine has been criticized for not being as effective against this current strain of flu, the vaccinations appear to have made some headway against the disease.

Parish health units will continue to offer the vaccines but officials with DHH recommend that you phone ahead to make sure the vaccine is still available and to minimize your wait time. If you're not sure where your local parish health unit is located you can visit the Fight the Flu website for directions and other important information.
