New Orleans City Council has just approved a ban on smoking and electronic cigarettes in bars and casinos.

The Advocate is reporting that the prohibition passed by a unanimous vote after a series of amendments offered by Councilwoman Latoya Cantrell.

The smoking ban will go into effect in the next 90 days.

The ban has been a hotly contested issue in recent weeks, with proponents arguing that second-hand smoke puts workers’ health at risk and lobbyists for Harrah casino and some bars claiming a ban would seriously impact their businesses. E-cigarette vendors and users also pushed back against the measure, seeking to have changes made to allow “vaping” in indoor establishments.
