It seems that McGruff the Crime Dog hasn't been taking a bite out of crime as of late. John Morales, the actor who usually portrays the crime-sniffing bloodhound, has been sentenced to 16 years in prison.

Morales was arrested back in 2011 when he was pulled over by Galveston police for speeding, when police then discovered two indoor pot-growing blueprints sitting on his front passenger seat and marijuana seeds in his trunk. Police then searched his home, where they seized 1,000 marijuana plants, 27 weapons (including a grenade launcher), along with 9,000 rounds of ammunition.

The 41-year-old actor pleaded guilty and said that he was nonviolent, but District Judge Vanessa Gilmore stated that:

"Everything I read about you makes you seem like a scary person.”

McGruff the Crime Dog is a cartoon bloodhound created by global advertising company Saatchi & Saatchi and the Ad Council in the early 1980s for the National Crime Prevention Council used by U.S. police in spreading crime awareness.
